TDRA Updates 2 Spectrum Frameworks to Enable UAE Air Taxis and Drones
ABU DHABI — The UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority has approved updates to two radio spectrum frameworks designed to support advanced air mobility technologies, including air taxis, delivery drones and next-generation electric aerial vehicles.
The regulatory updates comprise the fourth edition of the Regulatory Framework for Aeronautical Radio Systems (4.0) and the third edition of the Regulatory Framework for Unmanned Aircraft Radio Systems (3.0).
TDRA said the revised frameworks are intended to keep pace with rapid advances across aviation and unmanned aircraft technologies while providing the regulatory foundation and spectrum resources required for safe and reliable operations.
The frameworks address communication, navigation and air traffic surveillance systems that will underpin emerging advanced air mobility services, helping improve airspace safety and operational efficiency while supporting innovation in smart transportation.
H.E. Eng. Mohammed Yousef Al Ramsi, Deputy Director General of the Telecommunications Sector at TDRA, said the updates form part of the regulator’s efforts to prepare the UAE’s telecommunications infrastructure for future technologies. His current TDRA title is also reflected in the Authority’s official communications.
“The UAE believes that building the future begins with preparing for it,” Al Ramsi said.
“At TDRA, we continue to develop regulatory frameworks that keep pace with rapid technological transformations and enable innovation across various sectors.”
He added that updating the two frameworks will help provide the spectrum infrastructure needed for advanced air mobility systems to operate efficiently and reliably.
The move forms part of the UAE’s wider effort to establish a comprehensive advanced air mobility ecosystem through a combination of regulation, communications infrastructure and emerging transportation technologies.
TDRA said efficient spectrum management will be increasingly important as new aerial services depend on reliable wireless communications for navigation, command systems and air traffic coordination.
The regulator also highlighted the role of collaboration with strategic partners and industry stakeholders in developing the updated frameworks.
The new rules strengthen the UAE’s regulatory readiness for a future in which air taxis, drones and electric aircraft operate alongside conventional aviation, while reinforcing the country’s broader positioning as a hub for advanced technology and smart mobility.
