UK Unveils $800 Million AI Security Package Backed by Model Credits from OpenAI and Anthropic

LONDON — The British government has committed approximately £600 million ($800 million) in targeted state funding geared toward insulating national critical infrastructure and public health systems against emergent threats driven by artificial intelligence.

The primary allocation anchors a nationwide biosecurity initiative, directing £100 million toward establishing an advanced laboratory utilizing artificial intelligence to detect and analyze biological anomalies, alongside £65 million committed to engineering specialized countermeasures against lethal pathogens. United Kingdom AI Minister Kanishka Narayan stated that the facility is designed to evolve into an international nexus, uniting elite scientific researchers to protect civilian populations from biological hazards while maintaining rigorous defensive vigilance. The biosecurity push is reinforced by frontier artificial intelligence laboratories OpenAI and Anthropic, which will collectively supply up to £200 million in compute and model credits, with additional operational and scientific assistance provided by Google DeepMind and London based life sciences venture Basecamp Research.

Beyond bio defense architectures, the funding package directs an additional £120 million into Britain’s existing AI Security Institute to scale empirical safety testing and red teaming protocols against next generation foundation models. Concurrently, £130 million is allocated toward hardening sovereign digital networks across the economy through two specialized programs, designated as the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real Time Vulnerability Centre, complemented by capital allocations to facilitate the expansion of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) into Manchester.

The capital layout also prioritizes industrial resilience, academic talent pipelines, and regional governance across the United Kingdom. Allocations include £60 million dedicated to an investment fund backing British enterprises advancing machine learning across robotics, autonomous systems, and modern manufacturing, paired with a matching £60 million earmarked for direct public research and procurement contracts. The government further dedicated £30 million directly to regional metro mayors to accelerate localized artificial intelligence deployments, £23 million to analyze macroeconomic labor transitions, £18 million to establish a domestic semiconductor design academy, and £15 million to establish an innovation challenge prize rewarding public policy solutions centered on healthcare delivery.
