CRA Welcomes Google Cloud to Qatar Internet Exchange Point to Localize Data Traffic and Accelerate Enterprise AI Access
DOHA — The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar has formally announced the onboarding of hyperscale cloud provider Google Cloud as a member of the Qatar Internet Exchange Point (QIX) initiative, marking an infrastructure milestone in the ongoing scaling of the country’s sovereign telecommunications architecture and domestic data peering framework.
The QIX project operates as a non profit, government supported national interconnection hub designed to unify domestic internet service providers, multinational content delivery networks, academic institutions, government bodies, and enterprise networks. By routing and interchanging internet traffic domestically rather than dispatching packets across international subsea or terrestrial routes, the exchange secures optimized routing paths, lowers transit overheads, and elevates operational resilience across Qatar’s wider digital economy.
Under the direct integration, participating QIX member entities will gain low latency, localized peering pathways directly into Google Cloud infrastructure, reducing round trip response latency and improving network throughput. The domestic traffic localization is positioned to deliver elevated speed and availability for domestic telecommunications operators, private enterprises, and end users accessing cloud native architectures, enterprise workloads, and advanced machine learning models.
Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Affairs Department at the CRA and Chairman of the QIX Steering Committee, stated that onboarding a Tier 1 global cloud provider reinforces QIX’s strategic positioning as a critical national internet asset. Al Suwaidi affirmed that the deployment reflects ongoing national commitments to building a resilient, high performance digital ecosystem capable of accommodating Qatar’s digital transformation priorities.
Ghassan Kosta, Regional General Manager for Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Iraq at Google Cloud, emphasized that integrating with QIX advances the provider’s operational roadmap to enhance customer and partner experiences across the country. Kosta noted that localizing data traffic ensures faster, highly dependable access to Google Cloud enterprise suites and artificial intelligence platforms, directly supporting the long term technological infrastructure mandates articulated in Qatar National Vision 2030.
The integration is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for expanded peering participation from ministries, enterprise conglomerates, research entities, and innovation laboratories, while cementing Qatar’s regional standing as an interconnection hub for hyperscalers and international content networks.
