MegaFon Launches Commercial 5G Across Major Russian Metropolises and Unveils Private 5G for Industrial Automation
MOSCOW — Russian telecommunications operator MegaFon has officially activated its commercial fifth generation (5G) mobile network across a broad footprint of major metropolitan areas and strategic industrial centers throughout the Russian Federation.
The deployment targets cities with populations surpassing one million alongside critical industrial manufacturing hubs. Commercial 5G connectivity is now active for consumers and enterprise clients across Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Krasnodar, Samara, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as key regional manufacturing centers including Veliky Novgorod and Tver.
To achieve immediate broad coverage without waiting for newly allocated millimeter wave spectrum auctions, MegaFon utilized its existing Long Term Evolution (LTE) macro grid as the launchpad for deployment. The operator refarmed existing legacy frequency bands by upgrading core software and modernizing base station radio units, allowing simultaneous transmission of 4G and 5G signals. Subscribers possessing 5G compatible smartphones can authenticate directly to the high speed network, while the operator introduced a software driven 5G Mode provision for users with older devices to optimize connection prioritization and throughput over updated base stations.
Alongside public consumer rollouts, MegaFon introduced its specialized Private 5G architecture tailored for industrial automation, smart logistics, and critical infrastructure. The enterprise platform underwent rigorous testing in MegaFon’s specialized laboratory environments, integrating dedicated industrial security protocols and low latency data pipelines designed to operate uninterrupted alongside legacy supervisory control and data acquisition systems.
Khachatur Pombukhchan, Chief Executive Officer of MegaFon, characterized the multi city launch as a defining operational milestone for domestic digital infrastructure. He noted that fifth generation connectivity functions both as ultra fast municipal mobile internet and as the essential technological backbone for heavy industrial automation and social modernization across Russia’s regional economies.
The commercial rollout marks the latest phase in MegaFon’s multi decade network evolution. The operator launched commercial 3G services in 2007, introduced initial LTE connectivity in 2012, and launched commercial LTE Advanced at peak theoretical speeds of 300 megabits per second in 2014. Following its successful execution of Russia’s first international 5G video call demonstration in 2019, the current expansion transitions the operator’s next generation assets into full scale commercial and industrial monetization.
