Meta Unveils On-Device Muse Glimmer Model as Zuckerberg Champions Open-Weight AI

MENLO PARK — Meta Platforms has released Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter open-weight artificial intelligence model engineered to execute agentic tasks directly on consumer PCs and Macs equipped with a single graphics card. Released under an Apache 2.0 license, the model provides accessible parameters for customization, shifting workloads away from cloud-dependent infrastructure.

The release accompanied a 14-page essay by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, titled "The Future is for Everyone," in which he urged US policymakers to reduce regulatory barriers surrounding open-source AI models. Zuckerberg argued that stringent controls on data usage and distillation—a process using larger AI models to train smaller, efficient systems—risk transferring technological leadership to Chinese developers, including Moonshot, Alibaba, and DeepSeek.

"The notion AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic," Zuckerberg said in a video statement, advocating for distributed AI capabilities over closed-weight ecosystems controlled by proprietary developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Meta confirmed plans to release the weights of Muse Spark 1.2, its advanced frontier model, in the coming weeks. To address growing community opposition to local data center expansion—a major hurdle for AI infrastructure—Meta also announced a $1 billion community support fund as part of its $145 billion capital expenditure plan for the year.
