Mubadala Weighs Landmark $6.3 Billion Investment in Japan’s Largest AI Data Center

UAE

TOKYOMubadala Investment Company, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, is considering a ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) investment to back a major 500-megawatt (MW) artificial intelligence data center in Japan’s Akita Prefecture. Channeled through MGX—the UAE’s dedicated technology and AI investment vehicle—the transaction would anchor what is projected to become Japan’s largest single AI infrastructure installation to date.

The project is led by US-based AI startup BitGrid and Akita-based IT developer S2. The partners plan to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to raise equity from global institutional investors, with Mubadala serving as the anchor backer. Total capital expenditure associated with the project—including surrounding power grid build-outs, cooling networks, and nearby enterprise supply chains—is expected to reach ¥2 trillion ($12.6 billion) by the time operations commence in the early 2030s.

The development will occupy a 56-hectare industrial site in northern Akita City, combining land sales by Akita Prefecture and municipal authorities starting late in fiscal year 2026. Akita was selected due to its abundant renewable energy resources—including over 2 gigawatts of planned offshore wind power—and ample freshwater supplies for advanced liquid cooling systems. The location aligns with the Japanese government's policy incentivizing the decentralization of critical compute assets outside major metropolitan centers like Tokyo and Osaka.

The facility will feature NVIDIA high-performance AI servers and advanced networking architecture. The strategic move highlights MGX’s effort to construct a diversified, resilient global AI computing portfolio while aiding the UAE’s long-term economic strategy to reallocate capital into sovereign deep-tech assets.
