Riyadh Enters Top 100 Global Innovation Clusters as Sole Gulf City in WIPO 2026 Index
RIYADH — The Saudi capital, Riyadh, has achieved a historic milestone by entering the world’s top 100 science and technology innovation clusters in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII) published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), marking the only city in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to secure a place in this year’s global classification.
Placing 92nd globally, Riyadh entered the premier global ranking on the back of rapid expansion across venture funding and domestic patent filings. The index tracked 419 innovation venture capital (VC) deals alongside 162 international patent applications originating from the capital, reflecting sustained institutional momentum behind Saudi Arabia’s technology commercialization pipeline.
The benchmark highlighted key national institutions driving the capital’s research productivity and corporate intellectual property:
Academic Research Champions: King Saud University (KSU), Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU), and Prince Sultan University (PSU) led scientific publication output, academic research, and tech-transfer initiatives.
Industrial & Corporate Innovation: Global chemical manufacturing giant SABIC and energy major Aramco spearheaded private sector patent generation, technology commercialization, and advanced R&D.
Venture Capital Ecosystem: A surge in early-stage and growth-stage startup funding, underpinned by sovereign venture initiatives and private equity funds, anchored the capital's high venture activity score.
The ranking serves as an external validation of the Kingdom’s Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) national priorities, coordinated under the Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA) in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. By bridging university laboratories, industrial leaders, and private investment, Riyadh has cemented its position as the primary engine for high-tech entrepreneurship and intellectual property development across the region.
