UAE Marks Union Pledge Day With 55 Years of Global Achievement
ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates is marking Union Pledge Day on July 18, commemorating the historic 1971 meeting at which the Founding Fathers signed the declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution and announced the country’s official name.
The national occasion, designated by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reflects on the foundations of the federation while renewing the country’s commitment to unity, national belonging and continued development. The official English designation is Union Pledge Day.
The occasion honours the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow Founding Rulers, whose commitment to unity established the foundations of a federation that has developed over 55 years into a globally influential economy and international hub.
The UAE’s latest national indicators highlight the scale of that transformation. In 2026, the country ranked fifth globally in competitiveness, maintained its regional leadership for the 10th consecutive year, ranked first worldwide in 21 indicators, and placed among the global top five in 67 indicators, according to the figures provided.
Economic performance has also continued to strengthen. UAE non-oil foreign trade exceeded a record AED 3.8 trillion in 2025, growing by approximately 27% from the previous year.
Non-oil exports surpassed AED 813 billion, representing growth of 45.5%, underscoring the country’s continued progress in economic diversification and international trade.
Beyond economic growth, the UAE has continued expanding its global role through humanitarian action, international cooperation and diplomacy, while maintaining its model of tolerance and coexistence in a society that is home to approximately 200 nationalities.
The country is also strengthening its position in future-focused sectors including artificial intelligence, knowledge-based industries, space exploration, clean energy and sustainability.
These developments reflect a national model in which the achievements of the Union are increasingly measured not only through infrastructure and economic growth, but through the UAE’s ability to produce knowledge, advance innovation and develop solutions with international impact.
As the country marks Union Pledge Day, the occasion serves both as a reflection on the decisions that laid the foundations of the federation and as a renewed commitment to carrying its development journey into the decades ahead.
