CHARLESTON — Emerging cloud infrastructure developer Nscale is in active commercial negotiations with generative artificial intelligence pioneer Anthropic regarding a secondary computational capacity agreement valued at approximately $45 billion, according to people familiar with the transaction.
The proposed agreement focuses on expanding operations at Nscale’s flagship Monarch data center campus in West Virginia. Under the operational framework being structured, Nscale would supply an additional 460 megawatts of dedicated computing capacity powered by Nvidia’s advanced Vera Rubin graphics processing units. The prospective contract follows an initial $45 billion compute commitment executed between the two enterprises in August 2026, which secured 460 megawatts across the first Monarch facility scheduled for capacity delivery beginning in late 2027.
Negotiations also grant the Claude developer a formal right of first refusal over an anticipated third computing building planned for the Monarch campus. If finalized, the transaction would double Anthropic’s contracted capacity at the site, solidifying one of the largest single campus artificial intelligence computing footprints globally while expanding Nscale’s corporate pipeline as it prepares for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange.
The talks unfold against a backdrop of intensified capital discipline across public markets. Prospective institutional investors have reportedly pressed Anthropic to temper its initial public offering valuation targets following broader equity market pullbacks across artificial intelligence builders. Market participants are increasingly scrutinizing capital intensive developers that rely on aggressive debt financing to fund rapid infrastructure buildouts, a trend highlighted recently when shares in peer neocloud provider CoreWeave dropped amid investor unease over its substantial debt obligations.
Concurrently, power generation and grid interconnection bottlenecks continue to challenge project timelines across North America. Nscale recently experienced a setback after software giant Microsoft withdrew from an agreement to anchor a flagship European facility following utility grid connection delays that deferred electricity delivery into the 2030s.
Despite regional utility constraints, the Nvidia backed developer has scaled rapidly, expanding total contracted enterprise value from $100 million to more than $103 billion in two and a half years. The expansion positions Nscale in direct contention with specialized GPU cloud providers including Nebius, Crusoe, and Lambda, with regulatory filings confirming Microsoft and Anthropic as primary prospective anchor tenants.
